Topic Breaking the Silence – Understanding and Transforming Safety Culture

This interactive session explores the complex nature of safety culture and introduces the concept of the “silent” safety culture—a condition where safety concerns exist beneath the surface but are unspoken, often leading to hidden risks and reduced performance.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of cultural dynamics in the workplace, learn how to assess their organization’s current culture, and recognize the key signs of a silent safety culture. Practical methods and real-world examples will be used to examine the negative impacts of silence on safety outcomes and the strategies needed to drive cultural change through leadership and employee engagement.

Learning Objectives

  • Define safety culture and explore its multi-dimensional aspects
  • Assess your organization to determine if a “silent” safety culture exists
  • Identify five signs that your safety culture may be silent
  • Understand the consequences of silence in safety culture
  • Apply actionable strategies to improve cultural visibility and engagement
