Topic ANSI Z244.1 / OSHA 1910.147 – Alternative Methods of Hazardous Energy Control for Machine Safety and Productivity Improvements

As manufacturing processes evolve, so too must the strategies for safely controlling hazardous energy. This session explores the use of alternative methods in lieu of traditional lockout/tagout, as permitted under ANSI Z244.1 and in compliance with OSHA 1910.147. Attendees will learn how to recognize risks, prepare for safe task execution, and implement validated control methods that maintain both safety and operational efficiency. With growing demand for production uptime, understanding when and how to apply alternative methods is vital to reducing risk while supporting productivity. This session will clarify key definitions, documentation requirements, and acceptable risk thresholds—all grounded in industry best practices and standards.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and define hazards and risks associated with tasks requiring hazardous energy control
  • Prepare for and implement the use of alternative methods instead of lockout/tagout
  • Understand the required steps and documentation to ensure compliance
  • Identify when a task has reached an acceptable risk limit
  • Validate safety circuits used for alternative control method
